Motor swap... easier to leave tranny behind?

I have saved for a long time to buy my refabbed s and j 383. Due to money constraints i am planning to motor swap myself. This would be my first! I have a gemneral idea on the process but have heard a couple conflicting ideas on how to do so. Will the tranny housing be accesible to unbolt it from the motor while its still in the car. Some say yes some say no. Its a 383 with a 727 torqueflight. Any ideas on how to make this a dream and not a nightmare?

Yes you can.

I did a converter swap this year in my car. 440 w/ headers and a 727. A 383 is just that much easier. Its a real PITA to get those top bell housing bolts though

What is the vehicle? How much are you planning on removing to remove the motor? Sometimes it's easier to just pull both out together, especially if you are in no huge rush.

More information is needed as we need to have a mental picture of what 'we're' working on.

Hell, you can stand inside the engine compartment and work on the motor!
