The 44RH in my Grand Cherokee just started to act up. It seems to have lost OverDrive and when decelerating it makes violent downshifts, mostly into 1st gear at about 10mph.

Up shifts are very smooth with no slipping and it cruises on the freeway in 3rd with no problems. If I manually downshift before the trans has a chance to do it itself, it works smoothly.

The trans has 216,000 miles on it and I just had the fluid changed a month ago.

The mechanic I saw today said my planetary gears are failing and the reason I can manually downshift is because it uses a different mechanism than the automatic part......i don't know if that is true?

I already planned on getting a new car in a couple months so I just need to get by!
