Having trouble with the search engine and I have a few questions if anyone could help i'd greatly appreciate it and post pictures.

How do I identify my transmission without putting it on lift?

I have a 1975 duster with a crate 360 and a 73' valiant 4 speed trans and 73 valiant 8 3/4 rear.

How do i identify the crate motor? wanted to know what cams, pistons, rods and etc.
vin says it was a 6cyl looks like original radiator i ordered a new one with a trans cooler. can i just hook this up to the trans i have or do i have to get one without trans cooler. i got a little shop happy on summit.

 

There may be no way of knowing who built the engine. Some builders will stamp an ID # near the factory VIV stamp for warranty purposes. The VIN is found on a machined pad at the edge of the block near the oil pan rail.
More info: The A body 8 3/4" axle went out of production at the end of the 72 model year. There were no A body cars built in 1973-1976 with the 8 3/4" axle. Starting in 73, the 8 1/4" axle was offered.

 

"Identify the trans."

Basically, you either have a 4 speed or the so called "overdrive" 4 speed. To tell between those two, just stick you head under the car and look at the very front shift lever, which is 3 - 4. If the lever is down, you have an overdrive 4 speed. If the lever is up, you have a conventional 4 speed.

This was a "trick," and Ford did the same thing. Mopar re--geard the 3rd gear to be an overdrive ratio. Then turned the shift lever upside down for 3-4 so that you shift 1- 2- old 4th gear is now third - old 3rd gear is not 4th or overdrive.

Now way to know about the engine if you did not get specs on it from whoever you bought it from, or tear it down and try to identify everything.

 

some 4 speeds were aluminum housings. theres also 18 and 23 spline trannys

pretty sure it doesnt have overdrive after its done raining i will check.

 

My best guess is that you have a 904 tranny.

quickest way to tell would be to peek at the pan. here's a little guide for ya!

 

He says he has a 4 speed. The 904 and 727 is an auto. no pan on the 4 speed box.
