Question 318 to 440 swap

I am new to this site and have a few questions. I am swapping out a 318 4 speed to a 440 with 727 in my 71 charger. It's all in the car and fits fine. My issue is the 440 is out of a later model car but don't know year. I think it was a New Yorker. My buddy yanked the 440 out of donor car so he could run the car in the demo derby. I have no clue what all the vacuum lines off the motor go to.

Also my wiring for ignition system will not match up. Looks like electric choke on carb and dist. Wires coming off of it like a pigtail. Any ideas for cheap fix for now to get on road before it gets cold?

I plan on changing ignition system and water pump this winter. Just wanna take for short drive before dumping tons of money in it. Please help

All the hook up should be the same....Just longer wires.....
Take a few pictures and post them up...

i think that for some years the color on the engine says it was a high performance or a mild engine. some people dont remember that chrysler did make mild 440s. my dad had one new in a 1967 series 300 i think it was Turquoise. it had a holley carb. total JUNK. but please note the O.E.M. holley carb that chrysler used was NOT the same holley you bought from you speed shop, the speed shop carb was a MUCH better carb, not even the same carb.

I know it's not pretty. Bought the car 10 years ago for a case of beer and I am the second owner. So just getting it going then gonna slowly restore it. I have been lazy the last 10 years but this is the year

1. You need a Vacuum diagram for what looks like a mid 70's car..

I have that resistor but not sure what to wire it to on the car. Came with engine. Is there anything I can delete off this motor? And how do I wire up coil and distributor with my current equipment.

I would only use the vacuum line from the dist. to a ported source on the base of the carb... Use a vacuum gauge on the carb ports... 0 vacuum @ idle and vacuum read off idle is the one you want for the dist.

Leave the pull offs hooked up....
Leave PCV hooked up....

Plug all the rest of the holes....

Looking at that vacuum hose diagram I should be able to get rid of half those hoses cause I don't have all that egr stuff on mine, correct?

Do you know witch 2 wires went to your old coil?

Oh...I see it know...You dont have the electronic ignition Box.... You need that...

Your old 318 had Points and condenser..... You need to convert, or find a points 440 Dist.

Ok...I under stand now...... if you find a points Dist. You can hook the one wire to the +side of the Coil..... The - side will go to the dist...

The Dist you have in that engine is for electronic ignition....

Which way is better for a distributor? Like I said I was going to change to prolly a msd ignition this winter. Just don't wanna spend a ton before I know if this motor runs good or not.

points dist will be cheap and make it run....

But a Ready to run MSD or ProComp Dist. will work well. But thats a big chunk of change, Coil and dist is going to be a couple hundred anyway...

If you dont have a fitting for the fuel line hook up...You might try to get one of those....
But that should get you up and running....

does anyone know if this distributor will work for what i am trying to do? dont really wanna deal with "points" but dont wanna rewire for the current electronic distributor on the engine now. unless someone has other ideas for me.

I got the distributor but no instructions came with it. Which wire goes where? Is the red one constant power or key on power and the black one to the coil? P.S. the spark plugs are a pain in the butt to get to. Any hints or trade secrets?

Another question is I dropped the distributor in but the vacuum canister is not in same location as the old one. Is that gonna be a problem for timing? The reason it didn't drop in same location is the control module gets in the way

ill look at minr tomarrow and get back to yiu but the 2 wires are the positive and negative to the coil i fo belive. then you need to wire a constant ground to the dizzy itself
you also need a key on power to the pisitive side of the coil and a keh on grobd to the neg side of coil. ill double checks tonarrow to make sure

Red to the + side of the coil
Black to the - side of the coil
And your ready to go...

Do you have the Rotor and wires phased the same as when you took them out?
As long as you did that... The canister dose not care.

racer hog if he has the same thing as i do he needs key on power and key on ground. the dizzy eliminates the need for the rest of the system

Yes... and that wire will be the 1971 Charger OEM wire that was hooked to the coil.
I going to guess thats the wire with the peace of tape on it? Or sdose that not go back to the ballest resistor?
OR
Am i missing something?

I marked it as coil so it must go to coil from 318 motor. I assume it would be same on 440
