I am new to this site just had a fantastic shape 67 4 door sedan New Yorker originally it had a 440 but was yanked along with the 727 transmission so my grandfather has given me a 318 and 727 tranny out of an 84 diplomat before I start taking the engine and Trans out to be put into my Yorker..... Has anyone done this or heard of putting a small block into this car??? If so what do I need/need to look out for in terms of fuel delivery and engine mounts and that sort of thing. THANKS GUYS!!! First it is a 68
Yes it can be done , you will probably need mounts from Schumaker to fit it , the driveshaft will work as is , rad not so much as the lower inlet will be on the wrong side for a small block , shift linkage will work . not a bad swap to do .

 

I'm fairly certain the door said it was a 67 old man is swearing up and down that it's a 66... Ill have to look again. There is no engine or Trans in the car right now so I'm just kinda putting in whatever I want... 318 for the fuel economy later on if I want more we have lots of 440s 383s 360s so that's not a problem what I'm seeing all I'm gonna need is an antenna, there is a piece of trim on the bottom of the rear drivers side quarter missing a windshield and a drive shaft if its not in the trunk, will a 71/72 Chrysler 300 drive shaft fit? Long story short I have an 06 silverado that I outran the police in on multiple occasions and finally got caught lost the license for 6 months get it back on the 7th so this is gonna be the car ill drive... If I drive the silverado ill be harassed by the RCMP every time they see me!

 

It will be a dog with a 318 That is a very heavy car. Needs the torque of a big block. NEVER offered with a small block for a reason. It probably has 2.76 or 2.91 gears. take your choice wortk it hard with a 318= bad gas millage. Work it easy with a BB and get better mileage

 

Maybe throw some lower gears in it then? I don't know I'm gonna try out the 318 see what happens... I have a heavy foot...

That's a big heavy car for a 318 i would use at least a 360 with a 727
the trans coming out of the diplomat will be a 904 and in stock condition i don't think it will last long pushing that heavy car down the road.
The motor will have such low hp/tq it will be working hard to move that car
in stock mod maybe if you rebuild it and install a good towing cam higher compression and the such.
If your grand father is afraid of you having too large of a engine because of your heavy foot you can still get in a lot of trouble with any vehicle high hp or not.
It'all going to be in your hands, when driving you got to use your brain and caution when driving any car!
Maybe you should drive the diplomat for a while and do a light restoration on the New Yorker MAYBE
JUST REMEMBER... when driving you can do great harm to many even death so teach your lead foot disiplin! WE ARE ON THE ROAD ALSO.

My grandfather isn't worried I just figured with a smaller engine I wouldn't push it as hard... I'm 21 so it's my fault if I lose the license... As well the diplomat is Aprox 1000 pounds lighter

 

I have also been thinking about just using the stock 318 for a while maybe until spring then purchase and install a 390 stroker kit?? Opinions?

 

My ’68 Fury runs a 318; they aren’t top end runners in stock form, but they have tons of low end grunt.

This is an odd swap, though; why not just source a cheap big block and save a lot of work?

 

a hope it never happens scenario if your in-experience causes a accident you can total a rare car also you can total some one else so what ever you do keep your mind about you and drive safely!

 

Been driving since I was 8, inexperience is a non issue... I also run Canadian drift competitions in my Nissan 240sx...

 

318 is free... And I'm not swapping... There is no engine or transmission in the car the guy I got it from ripped them out and sold them

Well, yes, not a 'swap' as in there is an engine there already; I just mean going from big to small block. That isn't done very often.

 

318 is readily available to me in my grandfathers yard.... The old man doesn't want to sell a bb to me for it... So long story short old man don't think I'm capable of doing it.... So I'm gonna do it... If the 318 ends up lacking terribly then ill do some engine mods and possibly stroke it to a 390 and if I do strokeit ill take the 904 tranny and replace it with a 727

it is a 68 , it has round side lights , 1 year only , 67 did not have side lights

 

Free 318..... Or I have to buy a 440....

 

My concern is that yer going to have to install new engine mounts, source a tranny and all that; there is quite a bit more work to changing engines entirely than some realize.
