340 engine build ?'s

So I decided that I am probably not going to stroke my new 340 Mostly because of cost issue now lol

I have a pretty much all original 71' engine (as original as a 42yr old engine can be) and now I want to have my J heads port and polished to get around 250CFM intake....is this feasible on these old heads??

I have a Performer RPM intake and want to match it to the heads, thinking about a 800 Edelbrock Carb to throw on top. Right now its just a Carter Thermoquad..Yuck

~My main question is what has been your proven combo from a stock 340 to get high horsepower without any clearance issues? Im using this as street car and want over 400hp

So im looking for specific cams, with use of J or X heads. If you used bigger rocker arms and what ratio..ect..

Thanks alot guys!!

some one else will chime in on this
most modern cams with the right set up are capable of making 1.5 hp per ci. so your going to make it depending on your combo porting is good. port matching to your manifold is also good but your cam is the most important.

@Gorts

Thanks man, I am just trying to find the right cam for my motor and thinking about going with slightly bigger rocker arms. But When I change these things, I do not know what else will have to be done as a result doing so lol

I have been looking into the COMP Cam k20-601-9 Cam for my stock 340

Its Basic Operating RPM Range:2,200-5,900.

Duration 291/311, Lift .522/.509

Is this to much? and what will have to be done to the engine so I can install these parts??

You will get a lot more bang for the buck using the 87-92 308 casting # heads , we swapped out ported X heads for 308s & gained 41 RWHP .
Just say no to Comp Cams , try Lunati , Bullet or Crower for a True Mopar grind .
If you have valve reliefs in the pistons you should be fine into the .540 lift range as long as the guide are trimmed . Why would you want so much duration with so little lift especially on a street build ?
800 Eddy over an 850 TQ , if the TQ is working it will kick *** over the Eddy

@Chryco

I never heard terribly good things about the TQ from other local ppl. but if you say its pretty great, your word is good to me! I will keep it and rebuild it then!

And I dont really have an idea of what cam to use, and with what duration and lift would be best. I have just been looking online and reading reviews on cams This is tough for me as I am doing this on my own lol

I really dont know a whole lot about the specs of a cam besides a lift of over .500 is pretty beefy for street use.

Anyone want to help me understand these numbers better or shoot me a link for me to read????

Thanks~Sean
