440 6 barrel center carb Problem
i bought a OEM 6 barrel assembly for my 69 gtx 440. Original HP 440 engine. It is a auto transmission car. I assembled the thing according to instructions and it runs fantastic at speed. However, it doesn’t like to idle at normal rpm. I have to keep the rpm up around 1400 rpm to keep it running. It chirps pretty good when you put it in gear. This embarrasses me but not much I can do. Is it possible I have a manual center carb and if so, can I modify it to work with my transmission.

To the best of my knowledge, the camshaft is original to the car. I bought it in 1999 from a private seller but he was far from the original owner. The odometer showed 4,200 miles when I bought it. I’m pretty sure it had been rebuilt at least once. The car had been in a prop garage in Hollywood for 11 years as it had been used as a prop in 2 made for TV movies from “The Gambler” series starring Kenny Rogers. I may very well have a vacuum problem but the assembly was installed professionally and I assume they would have checked that. They told me I needed a new torque converter. I never could accept that.

like previously mentioned, I would check for a vacuum leak by spraying some cold start around the base of the carbs. I have found six pak manifolds to need severe draw filing to get the surface true for a good carb to manifold seal. Then they need a good wad of sealer on BOTH sides of the thin gasket to get them to seal. The 440 should have enough "at idle grunt" to overcome the need for a smaller torque converter.
