I read online that the engine ID is located near the distributor on this engine but i can't seen to find it. Engine is a little dirty but where exactly is this number located.

Nah, that pad is only there on B/RBs. On B engines look below the passenger side exh manifold.

 

Ok thanks I found the number 246813010 under the manifold

tells me it's a 1959-71 383, obviously

Why I was wondering about the engine id # was the the story my dad told me about when he changed the timing chain in this engine many years ago. he asked for a 66 383 timing chain but it did not fit, so he ended up using one for a 65 383? The engine in this car is the original.

when my father went to get the chain, either the 66 chain he got was boxed incorrectly or the 65 and 66 were actually different?

Is there any difference between the 65 monaco 383 and the 66 monaco 383 in regards to the timing chain?

If yes, I would then assume that some of the 66 monaco's got the 65 383 and some got the 66.
