73 318 carb tuning
I have a 73 dodge dart custom with the 318 in it and i am having some trouble tuning a newly rebuilt carter 2 barrel bbd. I was told by the shop i received it from that the fuel/ air mixture ***** had been pre adjusted and not to mess with them until i had adjusted the choke and fast idle. So that is my question, based on these pictures attached, how do i adjust the choke and fast idle/curb idle for this carb. All replies are much appreciated (also when i depress the gas pedal to a certain point the curb idle pin gets stuck on the steps of the carb and keeps the engine revved very high unless i manually remove it by hand)

Set the choke fully closed....
With your fingers... Pull the choke pull off open and adjust the rod so the choke plate is open about 1/8 of an inch...
Start engine and adjust high Idle screw to about 800-900 rpm.....
Kick off High idle after about 2min of warm up.....
Allow engine to get to operating temp...
Install a vacuum gauge...
Slow engine Idle to a slower speed....\Turn mixture screw to achieve the highest vacuum reading....
Reset curb Idle.....
And your done.....
Looks like you have a vacuum leak... Looks like a port is not plugged?

the things to look out for on that carb. the top casting tends to warp. the top and 2 nd casting should have flat smooth surfaces. to keep this from happening again do not over tighten the two screws in the back. use just two fingers and make them a firm snug. NO more. i have worked on a lot of that model and ALL of the charts say 1/4" float level. if i remember the carbs that are like that one in the 50s had a spacer on the two rear screws, to keep the castings from collapsing.

Ok thank you very much for the help. RacerHog If the vacuum leak you are referring to is that open nozzle at the bottom of the picture then that just goes to the EGR valve which i plugged. I will plug the nozzle as well at a later time. Also by how do you adjust the choke rod. Is it physically bent or is there an adjuster?

normally chrysler didnt put adjusters on the choke rod. but you can add one with a screw and nut. cut the rod in two braze a nut on the lower rod. and braze a small screw on the upper rod. then you can disconnect the upper rod from the choke lever and lengthen or shorten the over all rod length.
