73 duster acceleration problem

I have a 73 plymouth duster 318 auto trans with a 2 barrel Edelbrock #1409 I believe and I'm having some issues with it running. Upon start it will almost cut out then sputter and surge for a little bit then take off almost as if it was not getting enough gas or maybe too much? It does this when accelerating from a dead stop as well as when I'm on the freeway and remove my foot from the gas and speed up again. I have a month old distributor in it with an internal ignition module and an external coil which I just replaced yesterday thinking that was bad but no help, and I'm getting a solid squirt of gas from the accelerator pump. What is next on the list for me to check? Thanks.

You should be getting a squirt rite at the touch of the throttle?
Recheck your timing and make sure the float level is good.

I'm getting a good squirt, I will check the floats since I have never done that and will also set the timing to see if that will help. I am also going to check the filter right at the carb to see if it's clogged, thanks!

Has it ever run well for you? when did this problem begin? FYI, towards the end of their relationship with Mopar, Mallory built a horrible timing curve into the distributors they were selling through Mopar. Perhaps you have one of these?

The floats are good at 7/16 gap and I cleared the jets with a little wire to make sure they weren't clogged, I also checked the inline filter and it was clean, timing is getting more off for some reason and when I put the top of the carb back on it runs even worse but same symptom. Fuel pressure is good and it used to run good but suddenly it started out of no where, haven't been able to figure out why...

Check the timing with a dial back, mech or vac advance could be stuck.
