Carter BBS Issue
Carter BBS Issue
Good morning all!
I believe I may have located the source of my current carb issues. The Carter BBS I have on my '54 Savoy has been weeping fuel from the gasket, and the float level has been verified as correct and the carb itself is not warped. With the carb pulled apart I noticed an area covered by the gasket that looks like it should be plugged, and it leads to the accel. pump check ball. Pressing the accel. pump pushes fuel up this area, into the paper gasket which then wicks fuel throughout the rest of the gasket.
I've looked at other photos of this carb (slant-six applications, for example) and this area is always plugged. Do I need to plug this? I've circled the area in question in the photo below. No one seems to carry this plug, so I may have to make a shallow plug out of steelstick, or some other non-porous material. Also, is the check-ball the correct size? Thanks to all for reading, and any help you can provide.

i think that carb is like the 2 bbl carb like it. the carb has two screws that go from the top casting to the bottom casting having ears that are not supported. so you must not over tighten the two screws. and all of castings must be flat.
I've checked the carb with a straightedge, and it's fine. I know about those two screws and not over-tightening them, the previous owner already did that and had to helicoil the tabs. Here's a photo of another BBS from the slant-six forums, notice the plug on the port in the same location as mine. This is where fuel is pushing up on mine and soaking the gasket.
ok... I take it all back.... The break Down I found shows it open with just a check ball....

Im not. getting your pics. So im going by.ur discription
Asuming you have had the car for awhile and this just started?
assuming the plug just didnt dissolve away
Most time missing plugs in a carb are impossible to purchas . Unless it comes in a rebuild kit.. sounds like the previous owner did a number on that ol carb
if I could see the pics I may have the part ...i got lots of parts from these carbs.
