Eliminating the Heat Riser
I want to remove the heat riser from my '64 Sport Fury with the 318. I understand there are pro's and con's to doing this but I live in an area of the country where cold weather isn't a problem. Besides it's a convertible so cold weather again, is not a problem. Can I get to it by removing the exhaust pipe from the manifold? Also, I thought about temporarily wiring it open. Is open turning the counter weight fully clockwise. Btw I got the valve free but the temp coil must be bad because the counter weight does not move when I gun the engine and sticks closed after a short drive and cannot be moved again until the engine cools. Remove the header pipe.... Open the valve.... Take your Mig welder and tack weld it open....
Or remove the manifold and cut it out and then weld up the 2 holes on each side.
OR install headers....
Or install a different Manifold and have the muffler shop make the fit...

Here's the rub. I don't know if it's open or not. Like I mentioned I was able to free up the counter weight so I can't tell if the valve is actually opening or closing. What does happen is that the car will run fine until it heats up after driving it 5 miles or so and then runs rough. This didn't happen until I started fooling around with the heat riser. I have all the service records dating back to the day the car was sold and the PO had the same complaint a couple of times through the years and it was always the heat riser.
