Essential to do initial, full mechanical advance and at what RPM (no vacuum attached).

Then advance vacuum attached raising RPM slowly and record numbers, Advance/RPM.

This will take any guess work out and either correct the problem or allow confidence to move on to the real problem.

This is the ONLY way to do it.

Your right Bob, but geez, "A timing light won't tell you if your over advancing".

Yes it will. It will tell you how much the vacuum advance is responsible by disconnecting and reconnecting. Then, compare to what the shop manual recommends (I think it is something like 5 or 7.5 degrees at 15 inches). If 68N gets 15 or 20 degrees advance with the vacuum connected, then his theory of over- advancing may have merit.

Hey Newport, how is it going, hopefully some progress.

I apologize, I did misquote our Mr. vacuum leak Demetri.

Hey guys sorry for being absent.. First couple weeks of back to university have kept me a little busy. As for the car I have since disconnected the vacuum advance and have been driving it like that, added an extra degree of base timing (now 8.5) to help things under load without the extra advance and it seems to like it. Didn`t seem to take away from performance anywhere else and it cruises very nicely as it should.. Very refreshing to drive a car that`s running well. I may look to try an adjustable vacuum chamber at one point but for now I am content.

Thanks everyone for the insight and help!!
