Mopar 440 - BAD SOUND!?!?!?!
Mopar 440 - BAD SOUND!?!?!?!
This is a mopar 440, bored .30 over, complete fresh build with about 300 miles on it. I just had it tuned up, timing adjusted, carb adjusted....... choke adjusted....... seemed to be running GREAT. Prior to tune up, my timing was off and I was running hot..... after being adjusted, I've been running at a perfect 180 constant.
I just changed the oil, oil levels are great, and as I'm out for my "test" drive after the oil change, this sound started:
I originally thought no big deal, maybe my new water pump went bad...... so I disconnected the belt to the water pump, and it is still doing it.
I'm at a loss.......and the bank account is wearing thin after the cost of this build, tuning, blah blah blah.
Any ideas where I should be looking first?
Thanks!

The starter gear not disengaging would make sense... good place to start looking anyways I suppose.......
That could make a whiring noise with the occasional tink? I'll have to check that first when I get home...... thanks for the idea!

could it be a bearing. but not an engine bearing. here is a history note. Chrysler invented the Oillite bearing. its a good read. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oilite
Looked into this with a stethoscope tonight.... Something has literally blown up behind my timing cover...tearing it down tomorrow night... Atleast this should be a relatively easy fix without having to pull the motor... More to come after I get this opened up!!
As we were running the motor to diagnose it......... you could literally hear it self destructing.... We had the stethoscope directly on the timing cover and it was clear as day....we turned the motor off immediately... more to come after I get out of work today....... oh the anticipation!
Problem Figured Out!!!
OK, figured out the problem!!!!!!!!
Here is what happened.... Back when I first put the newly built motor in the car, I was having heat problems...
I had an underdrive aluminum pulley on the crank which I thought was not spinning the water pump fast enough..... so I bolted the STOCK crank pulley back on...... however, when I did, I used the bolts that were off the aluminum pulley..
Little did I know these bolts were TOO long for the stock pulley. When I screwed the pulley on with these bolts, they went THRU the harmonic balancer, gouging the timing cover. When I tired to start the motor when this happened, it was so gouged in there the motor wouldn't even turn over.
I finally figured that out, but at that time, apparently the damage was already done. At this time, I had no idea I had done any damage...... well, until this noise started.
When I gouged the hell out of the timing cover, it shoved the gasket IN towards timing chain......
Eventually the chain / gear must have started eating away at the gasket, and eventually yanking it into the timing cover completely.
Luckily, when this happened, I caught it right away..... it looks as if the only damage was to the timing cover and gasket.
Talk about a close one. New gaskets and cover have been ordered and should be here Monday for re-assembly. Live and learn I suppose! My fault completely!

Yes... crank seal, not gasket
Now I'll get it all back together, and flush the motor a dozen times to make sure nothing is floating around anywhere that it shouldn't be!
