Which Muffler ?

Which Muffler ?
I am planning to install some new exhaust parts. Was wondering if anyone knows what would be in between a standard muffler and a glass pack on loudness. Standard is to quiet and a cherry bomb is to loud for my neighborhood. Is it all or nothing?

Back when some of us were "Jeepin" (me, a 340 powered FJ-40 Landcruiser) we pretty much fell in love with the ORIGINAL replacement Corvair "Turbo" mufflers.
Now, I'm not talking about some aftermarket "thing" which is "called" a turbo muffler. I'm talking about a genuine factory -like REPLACEMENT muffler for the turbo'd Corvairs, which used to be made by Maremont and Walker. They weigh about 10 times as much as anything, (example) that Thrush ever built. I don't know if they are still available, but we just used to love those things.
Another thing: You can have some pretty loud glass packs/ other straight through, and a small, VERY small resonator on the rear will tone 'em right down.

Cherry Bomb is a type of glass pack, they will be very loud. "Glass Pack" mufflers are everyone elses version of the original Cherry Bomb.
If you want something that has a nice rumble to it, FLowmaster has a 50 series that sounds good on teh outside and doesn't let too much in. There is also Magnaflow, Hooker Max Flow, Gibson, etc.

On the Lincolns of Distinction web site, for many years, the muffler that has the "best sound" (very subjective, I know) with reasonably low volume is the Dynomax Welded SS Race muffler (oval type, not round). It was liked because it sounded deep and throaty, seemed to attenuate the higher frequencies, and didn't boom on the highway. I think the current replacement is the Ultraflow SS. Lots of inlet/outlet pipe configurations available. They are not cheap, but they won't rust out, either.
