Need help with a Holley 1945

I have a 84' Dodge D100 with a 1BBL Holley 1945 that I've been having problems with but I've finally figured out part of the problem. When I opened up the carb I found the edge of the rubber pump cup had sheared off and was loose in the bowl. I also found allot of what looks like carbon in the bowl and through out the carb. So my question is where is the carbon coming from and how can I fix the problem? Thanks.

from my understanding ( NOT AN EXPERT AT ALL) carbon is going to acumulate no matter what to some extent but the carb not being adjusted properly and bad fuel are a couple things that can contribute to this. Or that is what I have found from my readings. My 4150 does a similar thing and i have to clean it out every couple summers. this year it seems to be doing a bit better after having some help tuning it.
