numbers matching?

I have a 68 Road Runner 383 4 speed car, I don't have the data/fender tag or a build sheet. How (or) can I confirm the engine and trans I have belong to this car?

thanks

There should be a flat pad on the side of ther side pan rail with the VIN# on it. That's the passengers side.

The passenger side of the block didn't have a stamp or pad but I did find stamping on the flange where the bell housing bolts on. Looks like the engine and trans match. I also snapped the core support by radiator. Not sure how to tell if the engine and trans match the car?

decoding the VIN, RM21H8GXXXXXX, it is a Belvedere/Road Runner/2-door sedan/68/special order 8/St Louis , MO.
so engine was special order 8, whatever that means...
but looks like it's not numbers matching. the VIN is 8GXXXXXX while the engine and trans both are 8AXXXXXX
