Piston rings and oil pump

1969 Coronet 383ci : Is there a way to replace the piston rings without removing the engine from the car ?
And what about the oilpump ?

Yes it can be done When you get it down that far, It is probably less than an hour to finish removing the engine. How many miles on the engine ? What you need to do is have someone measure the cylinder once it is apart To see if it can be re ringed or needs a re bore.. Going that far you should also replace the timing chain and the crank bearings too...
Personally I have never had luck just replacing the rings. I did a 400 many years ago. ended up re boring it..

the oil pump is outside the oil pan , one of the only engines designed this way & can be swapped in minutes , I agree with the rings though , the bores will be tapered & you will need to hone the cylinders to seat new rings & then the engine will need to be cleaned properly & brgs & timing chain will be shot too

yea rebuild it... you can get away with bearings, oil pump, cam, timing chain and gears, valve seal's, but too re ring a motor is to important to hack it .pull it and send it out to a shop if you don't have a engine puller your local rental store should have one.
and pick up a engine stand.
You'll be happier in the end.

92K ? Your problem is more likely to be valve seals. Why do you want to re ring it ?

I agree.

"In the car" gives you a poor situation to properly inspect, measure, hone, the cylinders, and CLEAN the engine. On top of that, it is simply much more difficult to crawl around under "a bunch of times" to rotate the crank, remove and replace rods, and mike the crank, etc.

In this day and age, with the vast supply of cheap import engine hoists, etc, it is fool hardy to try this. You can save "some" by leaving the transmission in the car. You'll have to devise some method of holding up the trans. On my small block Dart, I simply wrap a ratchet strap under the transmission bell and hook it to both torsion bars. The transmission is not ALL that heavy.

I see you are in Belgium- that makes it hard to get parts. If you are planning to get an engine hoist ? GET a 4 leg stand. You could possibly try and replace the valve seals on the motor. Stuff some rope in thru the spark plug hole to hold the valves up. Then bring the piston up to TDC Remove the springs, replace the seals and re assemble

If you do end up removing the motor-- Change the front pump seal in the transmission while it is out

I replaced the valve stem seals on one side (4 cyl) of the engine yesterday.
A few were broken and cracked.
The other side will be done during the next week. I replaced them with the ones in the picture below. I did it with compressed air in the spark plug hole.
Once they are all done I'll see what comes out of the exhaust. If it's clean, I'm done. If there is still smoke (and black spots on my rear bumper) I'll have to go further.
And indeed, TVLynn, I'm in Belgium and these parts are hard (read impossible) to find here. I have them shipped from USA and sometimes I pay more for shipping then for the parts.
