Hello, I have an 87 5th ave that needs a new carburetor. And I want to buy one new. But when I look up compatible carbs sold new, all I get are Performance results. Does that mean they are for racing because I just need a standard carb that's going to fit and last a while.
Rockauto shows a holley 2bbl for an 87 5th ave. Sound about right or is it a 4 on a 318? Chances are you will find rebuilt unless you go to the dealer. hope this helps.
I don't know. It's a 2 barrel but I thought a 318. See, I've been fixing her on my own, with zero knowledge of cars...but I bought her because I got a great deal, but also because I am rough with cars..but im smart and I would probably learn quickly to fix it. So this is what I have done and what is happening. Fuel pump, fuel filter, fuel line, thermostat housing, spark plugs, wires, distributor cap, air filter and I also tried just fixing my float. And a carb rebuild kit. As I just put my carb back together and was connecting the hose from my valve cover to the air cleaner housing. The nipple on my breather cap broke off. Went to autozone to get a replacement and all they had was a universal one...which did not fit. They didn't have the correct grommet and "made" one from. A piece of hose for me. Went to work and back the next day and used a half a tank of gas, on start up there was black soot from my exhaust, and I had an oil leak. I started to work on it again, and searched for the grommet and where it could go, also replaced wires and plugs again, and manually reset my timing. I also bought another rebuild and after putting it back together I was leaking fuel from the carb itself. All the work I have done has been through Google and youtube.com. no manuals no mechanics just consistent info I could find during Google search. These carbs are complicated and there were so many things that could be causing this that I don't know where to even start. I think ultimately I've tried all the little stuff, and ultimately feel like I just need to replace the carburetor but I don't know what kind, what else should be replaced when replacing the carb, and any pertinent info I need to know when replacing it. Any help would be appreciated. I should also mention I am a single mom, but am great at improvising and finding the best deal on anything. I just need a little bit of guidance. Here is a picture of my current carb.
Check your oil level to make sure you did not dump gas past the rings into the oil pan. There are two carbs, yours is the 2 barrel with the electronic feedback system. About 400.00 rebuilt.
Another thing to look at is the rubber fuel lines. If they are cracked or dry on the outside then they are most likely coming apart on the inside. The 80's cars were not set up for ethanol fuel and the rubber lines fail, clogging carb filters and passages.
Leaking carb may be as simple as a gasket in upside down.
Do you know where your oil leak is coming from? The breather or the PCV valve?
Black smoke is running too rich, how did you set your idle mixture screws and metering rods / jets? Were you going by google or something more specific to your vehicle and altitude? The public library often times has manuals on vehicles. I can look through my stack and see if I have a manual for an 87 mopar. If so you can have it.
Did you use a timing light and disconnect the advance on the brain when you set your timing?
Thanks for answring..no I didn't have a timing gun and there were no marks to indicate or measure the mean. So I had to use the screw driver in my number one manually crank my engine until the screw driver hit top dead center. That I learned from Google. I did end up buying what I thought was a repair manual but it was for a complete tear down and rebuild. It was not what I needed, and I got my money back. I should have kept it tho it did have parts info.
there was gas in my oil because of all the blowby that was created, and that's how it started, I couldn't pass emissions because I was running rich. Then after the first time with carb kit it was fine, no leaks anymore until I tried to attach that hose from my breather cap and it broke. Also, the oil leak is from the hoses that go right by the carb. Sorry I don't know all the part names, it's a pain too trying to describe to Google just to find out the names of the parts
but the hoses attach together just above the valve covern on passenger side. I don't know where they go but they have oil in them.
