Valves or rings

Hey all, short of tearing the engine apart, is there any way to tell if I am smoking because of rings or valves?

Thanks!

Compression test to find the offending cylinder or cylinders. When or if found use a squirt of oil into spark plug hole and retest. In most cases the oil will seal the rings briefly and bring up the reading.

Note: Carb blades open to get air in, all plugs out, fuel shut off, no spark. Have battery in good shape or car orientated in good spot for jump or leads.

also cylinder leak down test if the compression test checks out fine.

Try compressed air in the spark plug hole with adapter, both valves closed at TDC. If you here air sounds at carb = Intake valve, at exhaust = Exhaust valve, at valve cover breather or dipstick tube = Rings.

To get compressed air in the cylinder, is there some kind of adapter I can get for my air hose?

The engine smokes really heavy when I rev it up.

I do not want to go through the trouble of swapping out my heads, and then end up having to pull the whole motor anyway.
