440 Cast Crank - OK For Build?

My 440 project engine came with a cast crank. Motor is a '77 New Yorker.

I imagine a cast crank would be fine for hard street use/occasional drag use, providing it passes a magnaflux.

Yea, nay?

What are you building?

A freshened up street engine with cam swap and some headers. Sure!!

What are your plans?

I'd like to build a strong street/occasional strip motor. Billet main caps, ARP bolts or studs, 7/16 rods, forged pistons, nothing out of the ordinary.

I ran cast cranks in BB Chevys with no prob. I'm not familiar with 440s (yet). I imagine the cast cranks are pretty strong. Any probs with these cranks?

They are fine. And will work well in your build. Sounds well thought out.

Same BB Chevy rules apply. As a general rule of thumb ( not backed by scientific data regarding tensile strength cause we all know that materials quality vary) I opt for selecting forged at the 525/550HP (100HP over CI) threshold or upper level rpm extended use.

Or if the cost of balancing the combo would be offset by switching to another material. So it works both ways being as cast is lighter.

Save some money in your build for some Tylenol as you are about to discover we don't have the aftermarket support as the BB Chevy guys.

I don't know. But the 440 Source is certainly a candy store, as are so many other vendors...trying not to get stupid expensive.

Second what PK1 says. I would put most of my money in the shortblock without hesitation. Later if money becomes available heads, cam and intake changes could be looked at to go to the next level, knowing you have a solid foundation to take the increased power.

With all the strokers being built these days a steel 440 crank should not be hard to find anymore . I agree , build the bottom end as strong as possible & then you can upgrade the top end with no worries later on .

Having broken a crank in a home built 360 hp 360 I personally would not build another engine with a cast crank

I've never heard of a cast crank actually breaking. What happened? Did you have the crank checked out before building the motor?
