1999 Ram transmission interchangability

Howdy. This is my first post here. I just bought a used 1999 Ram 1500 4x4 knowing the transmission needs to be replaced or rebuilt.

My question is what years will fit? I know 1996 to 2001 but as far as electrical connections go what is a " plug and play" transmission? What year truck can I buy a used transmission out of and have it fit my truck with no problems?

Thanks people.

Any used 4X4 trans would be a gamble. Rebuild the one you have !!! Make sure to Flush the cooler lines very good, if there was a lot of crap in it It wouldn't hurt to instal a filter in the return line & REPLACE the converter

x2. I would not use anything used. Replacement internals are available for low cost.

From a dead stop, the truck accelerates in first but wont shift into second without letting off the gas pedal. If I give enough gas, it jumps back into first from second (passing gear) and the engine just revs until I back off the throttle again. If i manually start in first and accelerate to 3000 rpm then manually shift into second it stays in first but if I select drive then it will shift but it still slips a bit.

The fluid is not red and it smells like gear oil...lol. The previous owner said a shop told him the bands need to be adjusted. My mechanic drove it and scanned it and said it needs a rebuild. Now I have heard the shift solenoids could be bad. Should I just rebuild it or put new solenoids in, new filter and fluid change and hope for the best? It could be a waste of money if the problem is a rebuild.

rebuild the transmission or get one of the older trucks that actually looks nice.

I hate the newer trucks as they are without question BUTT ugly. The dakota's arent bad but the full size are just ewww.

rebuild it yourself or buy new.

it's not that hard if you need parts and manuals this is the place, also look on the web for your trany... there are lots of how to videos. makes it real easy.
with a clean uncluttered work space snap ring expanding pliers pick shop press it easier that engines .
IMO,

First: Adjust the TV cable!!! They slip out of their housings and do exactly what you described. They also bind in the cable sleeve.

Then adjust the bands. Easy to do yourself. Ive seen shops that dont know how to do it. To some folks the Dodge is like the rubix cube so you need to be educated.

My TV cable has what I consider as too much slack. I am no professional but it just seems loose to me to the eye. There is about 1/2 to 3/4 " droop in the cable where it attatches at the throttle body.

Scroll to the first pic in this link. The cable I am talking about is directly to the right of the red circle where it comes out of the sleeve and into the throttle control thingy.....silvery bracket.

Link?

Get that TV cable adjusted properly first and see if you still have an issue. If so.....

You should drop the pan (keep as much fluid in the pan as you can) and look to see what you find on the bottom. I'd be willing to bet you have a lot of metal particles. If you see that, rebuild the trans, flush/reverse flush the lines and cooler, replace the check valve in the lines and replace the torque convertor and pump.

Assuming you have a V8, you'll have a 46RE tranny. A really good transmission guy who knows dodge truck transmissions can rebuild it with some 47RE (found behind the diesel/V10 motors) internal parts. This will help the transmission to last longer and be stronger, not to mention, the cost should be the same.

So i bought a fully rebuilt transmission and have it installed. I added 8 liters of trans fluid and started it up. I put it through all the gears several times and shut it off. Topped it up and checked the level in neutral. Level is good 10 liters in total.

Question is this. When i started the truck for the first time there is a loud ticking coming from the bell housing. Before and after topping it off. The idle is rough. The noise generally disappears when in reverse.

I back out of the garage and the trans temp light lit up.

Any ideas on what the problem may be please would be great.

I pulled the crank sensor out....i bought a new one, to see if it was contacting the flywheel. I don't see any signs of contact. The rubber grommet that the crank sensor slides through fell into the bell housing. Will it have any ill effects if I just leave it in there??

It will get torn up. You should do what you can to get it out though as that helps protect the sensor from vibrating against the housing.

How long has the truck been running since everything was installed? Did you install a new Torque convertor?

it was a busy end of week...
I was going to say that the TV valve and it's bore will wear and give the same symptoms there is a repair kit for this but now it doesn't matter.
As 78D200 I hope you replaced the torque converter.

Well the shop that sold me the trans sold me the torque converter too. One can only assume that its a new unit. Some shops paint the old ones.

The truck was put back together and the issues started the first time i started it up. Pulled the dust shield on the bell housing and it doesnt appear any of the four bolts attatching the torque converter to the flexplate are rubbing or loose. My check engine light and trans temperature light both came on.

Possible the flexplate would have cracked?? How could that have happened though?

I called a trans shop they said it might be that i fuked up the pump inside the trans. The first time i tried to install the tranny it would not butt up to the motor. I pulled it back out and found that the torque converter wasn't in all the way so i may have possibly damaged the pump inside.
