318 LA in a 57 Belvedere

My friend has a 57 Belvedere that he recently pulled the original 301 A motor out of and was given a free 318 LA out of a 69 Charger. The 301s crank sticks out further so that the torque converter can be bolted to it (the torque converter has studs, I believe it has no flex plate or is pressed together as a single unit). The 301 has an 8 bolt pattern, the 318 has 6. Can he use the original transmission? I believe it is a powerflite, push button. Is there a torque converter and flex plate combo that would make this all bolt together? If not, is there a way to drop in a torqueflite and make it use the push button linkage?
