New to me 318 paired to a 727. Discovered there was no dust shield, so I ordered and installed one. Sadly, it interferes with the torque converter bolts, at the very top at the dust cover tabs. The scuff left by the interference shows that the converter bolts are riding further in toward the center, outside of the recess in the dust cover, thus the interference. I confirmed that I got the 727 dust cover and not the 904. Seems odd that the recess for the bolts to travel in wouldn't match the radius of the bolt pattern. I can cut some of the shield away at the top and make it work but it seems odd that I should need to.
Comparing the 904 cover to the 727, it appears that the recess on the 904 would suit a smaller radius bolt pattern than on the 727.
Is the converter bolt pattern on the 904 actually a smaller radius than the 727?
Could the converter in this 727 be from a 904? (not sure if they are interchangeable)?
I have a similar problem with a 727 and an aftermarket TC.
After a while, just decided to loose the dust cover.
Been driving it that way for about 40 years.
Still open to ideas, thought.
Mostly all 318s were paired with 904s. Just rechecking if that's the case here. Secondly, they made a 727A for 318s. Some trucks with 318s mated to 727A trannys. Make sure you have the correct torque converter bolts. Regular bolts from thye hardware store may sit taller.
I have only ran into those issues with aftermarket items... Too think if a Flex Plate, Wrong Bolts, Wrong cut crankshaft thrust bearing shoulder, torque convertor pads wrong thickness.. Or just the shield plates are bent up and out of alignment...
Hope you get it fixed.... Cheers
