904 shudders 1st to 2nd

So I have a 1988 dodge d100 with a stock 318 and a stock torqueflite 904 trans. At first it clunked 1st to 2nd and kind of grinded, I thought maybe adjusting the kickdown band would help well it now shudders if I give it more then a touch of throttle at the start it shudders real hard and grinds sort of untill I let off and let it re-engage, almost like the clutch plates are bad how ever I'm not to sure.

No shift kit or anything installed of my knowledge, this truck was an old farm truck now my daily. It sat for at most 8 years before I got it. I recently replaced the torque converter as well and when I did I pulled the valve body sort of off bc I was afraid of doing something that would ruin the trans but when I did I didn't see anything bad. Adjusting the kickdown band did help the shifting though. The fluid didn't smell burnt still was red and had no metal sparkles in it just yet. The last 2 times I pulled the trans pan off it had alot of clutch material in it and gunked up the filter which is why I pulled the pan off the first go around. If u guys have any suggestions let me know soon as possible, I drive this thing to school and work everyday.
