Pumpkin swap
Pumpkin swap
Hi guys i have a 1967 satellite with a original 383 engine A, 323 suregrip pumpkin, i want to swap it with my 1974 barracuda, original 318 engine,A 323 gear pumpkin. Are the axle splines the same or not ? would the yoke be the same? pete
Yes. The pumpkin is the same. The axle splines from the barracuda are the same, but the axle length should be shorter. Just use the same axles that are currently in both cars. The yoke should be the same on both 323s. Be careful and check that the axle stops or pins in the pumpkin at the spider gears don't pop out. It's where the axle spline meets the inner gear spline. Looks like a flattened-out quarter.
When I first got my license, my brother had a 67 satellite 383 HP 4 BBL Auto. It was blue with white vinyl top and white interior. The car was absolutely beautiful. He let me take it whenever i wanted. My cousin across the street had a 67 GTX 440 that he bought new. I loved these cars so much I went to work at a Dodge dealer where I learned everything about these cars and had fun doing it.
There is two different sizes of yokes possible but you will be able to see the difference easily. You can deal with this by simply swapping yokes unless one is course spine and the other is fine spine then you can just get a hybrid spicer,
U joint.
U joint.
Good point! If the yoke is different and you swap it out it's important to use an inch pound torque wrench to check drag while turning the yoke. I believe it's around 9-inch pounds. Overtightening will eventually wear out the pinion bearing.
