Rear Differential...

We took the differential cover off today to replace the gear oil. and to take a gander at the rear end gears...I took a picture of it...maybe someone can tell if it is the LSD differential or something different in there ...I didnt even think to count the teeth to find out what gears are in it (if thats even how you could tell?)

Sometimes on the ring gear it'll have the teeth count of the ring gear and pinion. Looks like a two part case (could just be the picture though). 8.25 rear axle huh? When you fill it back up, you may need the "limited slip" additive, that goes in before the gear oil does.

TVLynn - It does look like an early clutch style. I've noticed that these last longer (wear wise) than the later clutch style. It looks like a stock unit to me. Someone could have swapped it in from another 8.25 rear axle vehicle or it could have come from the fatory like that.

I understand there is some kind of thrust button that you have to watch for if you remove the axles too. The clutch type is rebuild able unlike the later cone type

Of course not Just put 80w-90 in it....Luckily we just went to town and back in it (14 miles.) Whats that stuff called? ( just posi-clutch additive?) I will call around and see who has it...maybe Napa.. Thanks for the heads-up on that Gorts 5th & 78D200...We Sure don't need no major Failures at this point in the game...I have enough to do on the truck without re-building the rear-end also....

Thanks to: TVLynn, 78D200, Gorts 5th.......
