Rear gear change for incoming 440-3.

Hey all... I have a torquey 440-3 (google it) industrial engine going into a '74 Scout. it is already mated to a BB bell/adapter/D-20 and IH 727... so all good there.

Base Scout has a D-44 rear... but I am thinking I might want to swap over to a Dana 60 I have on another Scout... with a Detroit locker rear and 4.10 gears.

But... that is the issue... I hate those gears... and want them gone... but not at the cost of losing the detroit. So... without carrier change... (and I have heard every bit of incorrect info so far)... does anyone know what the largest gear change I can ACTUALLY go to?

Also I know there are 'thin cut and thick cut' gears... that can also fit... where normally they would not. So if you know of any other options that would fit... please part #'s and vendor links would be most appreciated!!!

Basic no brainer swap is a 3.73... but not a big enough gain for the effort.
Any way a 3.54 would go?

3.31 I know is the carrier change mark...

Thanks for whatever you can share. -Steve

If you are not using large enough tires on a "Shout" that 3.73 would not be good highway gears, you don't have enough tire!!!!

In the 70's when I had my 70 V code RR, a friend had a new 70 Chev 3/4T 4x4 with 4.10/ 4.11 gear, and 12x16.5 tires. BOTH vehicles were nearly syncronized in RPM at highway speed. At 70mph, my car would run 3000RPM, and his pickup would be nearly exactly matched. So close were they, that once when driving on the freeway together, you could hear the beat note (think twin aircraft engines)

DDodger...

Thanks... as i said... 3.73 no great game change.
I'll be running 31's... I need to keep this a sleeper... not big, not tall.... not seen coming.

Thanks for the reply though. Do you know for sure the break in gears for that carrier? Is there a thin or thick cut 3.54 that will fit?

Thanks!
-S.
