Torqueflite oil dumped while driving...

I have a 79' Dodge B300 extended cargo van with a 727 Torqueflite.
I had the tranny rebuilt about 9000 miles ago and immediately after the rebuild I noticed that there was a grinding noise in reverse while under slight load.
I went back to the shop and the mechanic tinkered with the inspection plate and gave it back...
I could still here the noise as before so I know he didn't even try to fix it...
Long story short I moved out of state so going back to the shop was out of the question.
The noise was still there in reverse and was getting worse and actually started moving to first gear under load.
So here's how it went down...
I was pulling an empty 25' travel trailer on the freeway one day and the rpm's began to increase but my speed decrease until POOF! a bunch of smoke started billowing out from under the van. I pulled over and checked and all the oil had poored out of the tranny...
I was able to slowly drive it home...

I called the shop and told the owner and he said it sounds like a new torque converter and oil pump would take care of it...

What do you think happened and how do I fix it?????

Dan -

Not a heck of a lot to go on, but sounds like you blew a seal.

Not knowing where the oil was coming out of, its hard to say what happened to it. Be safe and do a complete rebuild and change the converter.

The oil poured out from around the inspection plate...

What else can I provide exactly?

It's a torqueflite 727 out of a 79' Dodge B300(360, 5.9l v8)
It has less than 10000 on a fresh rebuild
It had a grinding noise under slight load in reverse and progressed into first gear.
While driving on the freeway pulling an empty 25' travel trailer the rpm increased as my speed decreased and then the oil just dumped in a matter of seconds.
It was still driveable without the trailer but I did not go faster than 10mph...

Going to have to pull the trans and go back threw it and see what all has got damaged..... It sounds to me like it has blown out the front pump seal... However with all the slippage, there might be deeper damage already caused and you need to check for that....
Good / Best of luck..

Thanks for the reply.
I've talked to the shop that did the rebuild and they agreed to cover the labor cost and I pay for parts...
Hopefully goes well.

Ok so I had the shop rebuild the tranny and I installed it myself...
It's not shifting into reverse!!! It sometimes shifts hard into drive and seems to drive fine in all forward gears but no reverse!
I filled it with a little less than 8 liters of Dexron VI.... The manuals say to add between 7 and 8 liters to a rebuilt tranny so I did and the level on the stick is about half inch above the max line...
I also noticed a bad leak at the inspection plate...
When I try and shift in reverse it kinda sounds like there's a small part that moved inside the tranny but nothing loud and it certainly doesn't feal like anything happened...
