Have a 1991 Chrysler New Yorker Fifth Avenue. Decided to clean the dash board, and took the plastic off for the instrument cluster.

Cleaned everything and now the speedometer does nothing. All other gauges appear to work.

Just starting to research the point of failure. Any suggestions on where to start?

Is there a fuse to check? Are there common issues I should check.

Appreciate in advance you reading, and any pointers you can provide.

 

Check out all the connection's on the cluster.

 

Unscrewed the instrument cluster and tried to take it out to examine the connections on the back. However, there are cables in the back and one wire in the front that prevent me from pulling the cluster out. Can't access any more screws on the cluster and don't know how to pull it out to examine it. Would you know how to get it out?

Just ordered a repair manual for the car that's on its way, but until then, I'm at a loss on how to take things apart without breaking anything.

 

Update: The speedometer is working again.

I suspected that I originally broke it by futzing around with the trip reset button for the odometer. Was futzing with it again and then suddenly noticed that it was registering the speed while driving. Don't know what it was or what happened, but it's back to normal.

I thought I'd ask if any of you might know what causes this speedometer issue. The speedometer/odometer cluster intermittently will fail but then start working again. Luckily, it works the majority of the time (and I have a GPS in the car so I always know what speed I'm going).

Usually I start the car and notice the speedometer remains at 0 and the odometer never moves. After parking it and coming back, the speedometer and odometer are working again.

The biggest clue I might have to its cause is that one time I started the car and the speedometer remained at 0. After going fast enough, the doors auto-locked, but the moment they locked, the speedometer dial jumped up to the correct speed and began working again.

Now what possible connection could there be between the door locks and the instrument cluster? Perhaps it is the computer? I'm no expert, and thought I might get the opinion of those more knowledgeable than me.

 

Sound like it could be the Speed Sensor is intermittent or the TCM (Trans Control Module) may have an issue.
All the other gauges keep work Correctly? Rite?

 

Yeah, all the other gauges on the cluster work fine. But how would the TCM relate to the speedometer, though?

Also, do you know the location of the speed sensor?
