Alternator swap

Ok. I am replacing the stock 60 amp alternator with a larger 130 amp one. I am re-wiring car with a painless harness. Is there anything I need to know so I don't fry anything?

the AMP gauge in the dash my not hold up. i have seen people just wrap a wire around the two posts, but that would take the AMP gauge out of the deal. if you have to do that just get a volt meter. most of the new cars use volt meters and seam to do the job fine.

I am assuming in doing the painless kit you are eliminating the bulkhead connector. If that is not the case make sure you do so. And if you are running the smaller voltage regulator that came from factory on the 68 newport upgrade it to the bigger one. I cant remeber what the ratings are but the smaller one will not handle a high output alternator well and you will more than likely explode a battery..... like I did.

give that a read. Very good info for any mopar guy.

Yep, some good advice, here. I have a 105 amp in the rig and I went voltmeter--no issues whatsoever. also, use the fat wire, as mentioned. The bigger the better. you don’t need 0 gauge amp wire, but something nice and thick to ensure no resistance and heat.

You should use a 4 awg wire from the alternator to the battery.
