Backup switch

My backup lights are not working so i removed the switch at the base of the steering column (68 Fury III)... can someone tell me if the red sliding mechanism on the back of it is supposed to attach to something?

Thanks

pics attached.

the switch works... as the red spring mechanism slides it makes contact with the wires and the backup lights come on, i can do this with my fingers. just cant figure out what actually moves the mechanism when bolted onto the base of the steering column?

is there an arm or something i am missing?

X2!
On my '68 Fury, the back up lights don't work either and other than checking the bulbs, I have never investigated....
Thanks!!

Here are some pics I found of what it looks like installed. I have the manual for the 68 Fury and apparently to get these out of the slot originally you must brake them and they are unable to be reused.
Since, to the best of my knowledge, they are not reproduced this makes them extremely hard to come by in working condition (or even at all)!
I am going to attempt to use a bolt or something in its place and hope it works.
if anyone knows where I could get this part please let me know.

ill keep you posted.
thanks

If anyone else is having issues with their back up lights, I would check this first. it seems to be quite a common problem but very little information out there on it!

I believe this is an older type set-up also and the newer models run through the neutral safety switch in the transmission.
