Signal Switch?

Hi all,
Somebody must have had this problem before. When car turns on, left signal indicator lights up on dash...not blinking, just steady green. The left front signal light goes on and stays on, again, not blinking just steady. Right hand signal works fine. Flasher appears to be working fine. Now, I took the flasher out to see what would happen. Light goes on on exterior and dash light as well for left hand signal. Ground appears to be fine as well. Am I looking at a signal switch here?

Wiggle the 4 way flasher switch a few times, make sure it's off, and try removing BOTH flashers.

The only power going INTO the signal switch is---

"regular" flasher power

4 way flasher power

power from the brake light switch when depressed

Next try unhooking the connector to the signal switch at the column

And ya, whut 'er we workin' on? 41 Ferd? 54 Stupidbaker? 71 Dogede?

I will try that in the morning. Frustrating because it started yesterday morning, then went away and reutrned this morning. Oh...it's a 70 Roadrunner.

OK, I actually went out and tried wiggling the 4 way...nothing changed. Then I turned the 4 way flasher on and wigled it. After shutting off the 4 way flasher, the problem was gone. Lol...I kind of think it will return though. I will keep posting as i either solve the problem or not.

Thanks,
Marty

Great. At least now you know what to watch for. I'd guess that if the switch was not "bumped" part way on, you have a signal switch starting to fail.

Update,

As I expected, the left signal light came on again. Turning on the 4 way flasher would eliminate the problem until next time I had to start the car. This time, I disconnected the 4 way flasher and the signal light does not come on when starting. I will check over the next couple of days to see if this has eliminated the problem. Whole lot easier to change the flasher than the switch...lol.

Well the flasher is NOT the problem. It's in the switch.

As I outlined earlier, there are three power sources going into the switch:

the flasher, the 4 way flasher, and when the brake pedal is pressed, power from that circuit.

So if the switch is centered, 4 way switch off, and no power to the brake lights, then you have a signal switch problem.

Yes, yes...I understand what you mean. And I will be replacing the switch...but not til I take the car off the road next month. For now, the temporary solution is adequate.

Thanks,
Marty

Your root problem is a bad ground. DC is an insane animal when it loses ground! The rule is.....when it dont work, check power. If it works weird, check ground! Your original question pointed me to ground. My Ram did the same thing after I put in a trailer pig-tail. Result....bad ground! Did you also notice that your front signal may have lightly glowed too?

Sorry, but not this time. What he's got there is some of the contacts in the signal switch are broke/ out of place/ worn. He already proved it by fooling with the 4x switch

There is no ground problem that can cause all this all at the same time.

Yes, I did check the ground, and it was okay.
