I'm getting ready to fire up the new engine the only issue I am having is getting juice to the coil during cranking. I have power to the coil when the key is at the run position.

What is the proper way to get 12 volts to the positive side of the coil during cranking? Can I simply add a separate wire from the "start" position on the ignition switch and run it straight to the coil? Or should I splice into the yellow start wire on the starter relay and wire that to the coil?

Truck was converted from TBI to carb a few years back, and I cobbled the wiring together to get it running after the conversion. I want to make sure its done right this time.

 

I did this awhile back and used a relay, start from key to power the relay coil and battery voltage through contacts to coil. I also bypassed the computer and put in an older alternator and voltage regulator, the regulator was in the computer and needed inputs I had removed to operate. This was in a '90's pick up truck, good ol' DOUG E.
