Cool Restoring Chrome on my Rallye Dash

Part 1 of 3 - Step by Step ReChroming Magnum XE/GT and/or Cordoba air vents.
Three posts of 25 pics/steps using "Bare Metal foil"

Long story short: First you need to carefully remove the vents by
removing the dash pad. They are screwed into the back of the dash
pad. Using a flat screwdriver through the front of the vent pop the
bottom and top pivots and push back and they will come out.

The frame piece in the vent in the back will easily come out.

To remove the shutters simply pry one side in to get them out.

It will fall apart into separate pieces, Very important -now wash
everything with soap & water.

Note: You could try this with out taking the vent completely
apart. It's very hard to get it back together if you've never
done it before.

Let all the pieces dry, I scrape the old Chrome off with a sharp
razerblade.

The razerblade leaves it smooth and clean.

Size the piece on the Bare-Metal sheet and cut to size leaving a little
over hang to make it easier to trim.

For this small of a piece I separate the foil from the backing. It's like
a very thin tin foil, so be careful not to let it curl up and stick to its self.
Save your backing paper!

Apply to the vent face using you finger lightly to rub into place.

Once it is in place go back over it with your finger a bit harder to make
sure its applied to the vent rim.

I use the back of my fingernail in pushing and getting out wrinkles in
the foil.

Make sure not to fold the foil over the sides, lightly pull the edges out
to make it easier to trim.

Use a fine point razerknife.

Use the tip or smaller part of the knife to trim the inner corners.

For the sides cut/trim in a downward motion, so as not to pull up the
foil.

Once you've cut the inside foil out save it for future projects.

Now you know why I said to save the backing paper, re-apply it to the
paper.

Trim the out side edge the same way, this time you don't need to cut
in one piece.

You may have some foil on the sides, not a problem!

Take your knife and cut or you can lightly scrape the access off.

At this point, take a cloth or in my case my shirt and rub/polish the foil
to get the chrome look!

OK, now we need to put it all together. For best results put the parts
together out side of the vent.

Use one of the other vents to make sure you put it together correctly!
And it should look like this.

Carefully drop the guts back into the back of the vent. Snap in the sides.

Re install the frame piece and its ready to be put back in the vent holder.
Push it in through the back side while making sure you don't scratch the
work you've done!

Re install and your DONE! They look NOS new with out the big price tag!
An exact match to the factory chrome on my Digital Clock!

Ultra-Bright Chrome

Thanks, I hope this helps with the Do-it-your-selfers!!
