340

I was wondering if anyone could tell me what type of heads and intake would be good for a 340 block?

Wow,you really know how to open a bag of worms. Cheap but good would be a set of 360 heads [72-79?] and an edelbrock performer RPM air gap manifold.

id like to drive it on the street as well as on the strip. Something that would be able to keep up or beat the big blocks.

360 heads with the full port/polish and a good 3 angle valve job, Performer RPM or LD340 with a MP 284/.484 cam, Holley 750 Vacuum secondary carb and TUNE, TUNE, TUNE! That with a good set of gears you should be able to take on all comers...in an A-Body, right?

you will have to look online for the price of the cam depending on what you go with.

I might go with MP 284/.484 cam and a 750 mechanical secondary for the carb.

well, depends how much the car is worth, you know like options and such.

If you're worried, I'd just go straight for a 360 motor. They're easy to find.

Is this car special in any other way like high impact color or alot of options.

ive run a wide variety of small valve heads and different cam setups in my 340 mirada.

ive run the 484, 508, and 528..i stuck with the 528. with 1988 360 heads with a light porting job and a port matched edelbrock airgap, roller top end, headers.. i ran 12.40s @ 108ish in a 3600lb car. stock stroke, 30 over, BG lawsuit carb with a proform high flow center. oh, and im running around 9 to 1 compression...

in the demon i have a 340 with 1973 340 heads, stock bore and stroke, stock fuel system and ignition system...508 cam, ld3400 intake, 750 holley, it weighed right around 3000 and ran 13.50s @ 101 ish. i also ran the 484 cam in that engine, and it didnt run as well as the 508, although i dont have times for that cam. this is also a fairly low compression engine.

the 360 can be had MUCH cheaper than the 340.

well iw ent a different route for now. i got an ld4b intake and didnt get the carb yet. i pulled off the heads and needs some cleaning up(ill get pics up in a bit). the rocker arm shaft on the 340 heads have the oil holes pointing up there supposed to be down right? if so the guy that rebuilt the motor didnt do it right. even when they did the pistons there looks to be a hair bit of rust in the cylinder walls not to sure yet didnt get to look at it closely.

If you have the the heads rebuilt, make sure you have the hardened seats installed. You need those, unless you use a lead substitute with every fill up.

but, this isn't a necessity
i have heard of heads going ten of thousands of miles without the lead, and stilll being ok
