72 Demon Resurrection

Hi All,

Its been a while but I'm finally getting around to posting some pics of the Demon. She's been drove hard and put away wet but give it time and a whole lot of $$$ and I'll get er done eventually. So what I originally thought was a 71' Demon turned out to be a 72'. Its all good though I think there were only some minor differences between the two years. Here is a link to the pics, I only got one of 2 fender tags with it, what was left of the build sheet was the corners under one of the buckets but here is the specs I was able to decipher from the first tag.

Congratulations, not great but not the worst I've seen. Are you planning a 340 restoration or the big one?

I am looking forward to you building a thread about your restoration. If you like I can move it to the A body section. Another usefull tip is to post your pictures here and not on a link to a photo posting site. It makes reading your build alot easier. If you need help with any picture or video posting I am here for you.

I am thinking of going with the original, It would definitely make life easier I think in the long run, there are also a couple of them for sale around town here right now. If I do I'll be looking for a 71 or earlier with 10.25:1 and a forged crank to rebuild.

72 Demon Pics

I took pics of most of the trouble spots, and I'll start by taking the windows out, putting the car on a rotiserrie I have borrowed, and removing the suspension. From there I will start with the stripping.

Because I am replacing so much of the metal(rear quarters, rocker, trunk exts. partial floors, front inners, and glue in patch on the ugly sunroof), I will not do a media blast. I have picked up a 5hp 18.5cfm@100psi compressor and I will sand, buff wire wheel and pressure pot blast the car in areas I can't reach. I will probably wish I sent it out for a media blast by the time I'm done but, I am in no rush and by saving the 2K on blasting I was able to get a decent compressor that I needed anyways and will go that route. I will post updates as I go. It will be a slow start as I am a maintenance welder for a large chemical manufacturing company and they are about to do their biggest shut down in their history $150Million. So I have just started working a 6/10's schedule from now until June. That should help with the build though. As this is my first resto I am open to any suggestions and welcome your thoughts. I have a Chassis and Body factory service manual that I was able to find on ebay so I think that is a good start for reference material

Not sure yet as to which motor I will put in it (still like the BB idea) but there is only one direction to go with the body and I'll start there.

Wish me Luck!

I have 3 motors to choose from but all need a full rebuild so it will probably cost the same or there abouts for all of them. A 340, 400 and a 440. The 340 is date correct but was detuned as I've been told to 8.5:1. I was thinking big block originally as that was the first motor that was given to me, and then I came across the 400 and was thinking 451 stroker, now I have come across this 72' 340 and I feel that it would be the right thing to re-unite this car with the motor it was born with (not matching #'s). I just want to build a daily driver so I'm not looking for monster torque or 600hp. Just a nice fast ride with a little jam under the hood. I know that ultimately it's my decision because I have to live with and drive it in the end. I am asking because I appreciate your opinions and I have options on the table. Your thoughts??

Cheers, Joe

Being a 340 car, I would put a 9.8:1 340 with a 284/.484 cam with a good valve job. Then a performer RPM or Mopar Performance dual plane intake, headers, and duals...

Or, you could go a completely different direction and pick up a 5.9 magnum/46RE/RH transmission and go all Fuel Injection with it, like I am with my Demon Only reason I bring it up is since you don't have the original 340, your, IHMO, options are greater. If the 340 was numbers matching, I would definitely do a nuts and bolts resto on it myself.

Did the other Demons sell in your area? I love the Demons and it is funny how only around for two years and people were mad over the name of the car. I wonder how many were parked in the church lots as they were mad about the cars.

Looks like a great project cant wait to see it done.

Hi all, Sorry for the big delay on the project, Lots has happened in my life in the past 6 months so I'll keep it short but sweet.

I moved and changed jobs which totally set me back on the restoration. I did however aquire a second 340 Demon body in the process which is lightyears better as far as the sheetmetal goes than my first one. I need both to make a complete car though so its all good.

I also located a 340 block and had a stroker built out of it in the past six months. Due to the overtime I've been working I had the whole thing farmed out to a reputable engine builder. They did a fantastic job for me and I'm very excited and motivated to get going on the body now that the engine is complete. In the Dyno it made 473Hp with 513tq at 4500 rpms.

I can get specs for anyone interested but off the top of my head I can tell you that it is a .030 over 72' 340 block, Milodon deep sump oil pan with Melling high vol oil pump, It has a completely forged bottom end stroker assembly with 9.75:1 compression, Roller Cam,Lifters and 1.6 roller rockers, Eddy heads, RPM intake, and a 750 quickfuel carb with a one inch spacer. Thats it in a nut shell. I'll try and post a few pics of it and the second Demon asap.

I'll be getting the car on the rotisserrie in the next few weeks and as I progress I'll keep you all updated.

Cheers

Here are some pics of the second Demon body, not perfect by any means but better than the first and for $1000. This was also a 340 original but column shift and not as good options as the first. It also came with an extra trunk lid. 71' I think as it has mounting holes for the wing and correct me if I'm wrong but I don't think the 72' had that option.

So, as I have mentioned, I've recently moved and its a great place to do the resto, I'm out in the country now and have lots of dry storage for my parts car. The garage is also well suited for the work. It is 28'X26.5' metal lined interior walls and has 220V power which will come in handy for the welding. I also have an out building that the compressor will go in and is also wired for 220v. As soon as I get organized and the car on the rotisserrie I'll post some pics of the place.

I am looking at some body mods on the Demon, specifically mini-tubs so I can put some larger rubber on the back. First thing though will be a media blast to see exactly where I'm at with the metal on the car. I have the capability to do that at home as I now have the space and the compressor/media blaster to handle it. The quote I got from a local company to get the car down to bare metal was $2500. I saved $1000 by purchasing my own 3cylinder 60 Gal compressor, a pressure blaster from Harbor Freight and a good water trap/air drier by Devilbiss. More pics of the shop and setup to come. Cheers

Cheers
