gas problems

gas problems
I have just gotten a 1973 Duster, and I have only been it driving around the yard for now. it has a 225 slant 6 in it and it has always started with the turn of a key, that is before I dumped a can of gasoline in the tank, now it just turns over and will not even fire. it is getting gas to the carb, now for my question.
since I have never added gas to it before, it has been running on the old gas in the tank which I don't even know how old it was, should I have added a lead additive or something else to the tank also? why wont my car run on the new gasoline I dumped in the tank? its the same gas i put in my mower and it runs just fine.
any ideals or help will be greatly appreciated.

Assuming you actually added gas (as in "from a gas pump", not sure about the "can" thing), only only way I can think of that happening is that you have a bizarre coincidence. Meaning - something "else" happened when you were refueling. Sure you still have park?
Today's gas may be crap by past standards, but there's really no reason for the car not to fire.

Are you positive it is getting gas to the carb and not flooding it? If so the only other option would be spark... Adding new gasto is could have disrupted the crud in the tank from sitting and clogged the sock filter inside it. Just my thoughts, Im not a expert.

Unless you know for sure you have the harden valves yes you need to add the lead additive or like product. As far as your no start issue, start with the basics. You say there is fuel at the carb I assume you checked that the accelerator pump is actually pumping fuel. The next step would be to check for spark. Either no spark or no fuel once you figure that out it would be easier to go from there in troubleshooting.

maybe the tank is rusted and when you added gas you stirred up a bunch of gunk so when you went to start it that blocked the fuel line... will it start with a lil bit of gas poured dwn thw carb?

also remember that the new gasoline has alchohol. sometime this has a negative effect on old rubber. especially if it is on the verge of coming apart. tends to clog needle and seats. {think fuel injection hose as a good replacement, alchohol resistant}...........just one idea, could be crap in the tank too...
