What? I don't think so. That is a lot of weight (even though it's an A-body) for a little 4 banger.

Why stop there? just get a Briggs & Stratton lawn mower engine and put that in there.

I've thought about doing the V6 swap but my research indicates the gas mileage would be about the same for a 318 Magnum as a 3.9 I don't know it would be worth it in the long run.

Well, at first thought and first look, I pretty much thought the same things everyone else did. Ick, hack, a 4 banger in a... yeah. But why should we shoot you down right out of the gate? So I did a simple google search for Horsepower and torque for the SRT Neon. I found a site that has drag stats. The number one on the list for the SRT Neon was a guy named Mike Chatfield pushing 485 horse and 500lbft or torque. He did the 1/8th mile in just over 7 seconds. So, why should we be so quick to say no? I say, if you're going to do it, do it right and build it strong. The lowest SRT on the top 10 on that web site was 218.30 horses and 232.50lbft. It can be done, it's just a matter of money, time and that "hell yeah" attitude that would make you ask the question in the first place.

for a fraction of the money and effort of the neon swap you can have a mid range v-8 with plenty of room to grow - now an srt-4 in a k-car, that sounds interesting...

I've actually seen this. Guy in my neighborhood has a dynasty with a totally built SRT-4 engine in it. That car is FAST...for a fwd anyway

I dream about the opposite... Making a rear wheel driven 318 powered little car. Although I'v never really gotten turned on by Neons the way I do for old cars. But mabye lets say an 84' Charger with the 318, but I'm sure thats been done already.

I remember a while back in one of the Mopar rags a story of a refrigerator white Dodge Spirit, or Plymouth Aclaime that had the 2.2, or 2.5 Turbo that ran 11 second 1/4 mile times and got 20+ MPG

There's no replacement for displacement.
