67 Coronet R/T Prostreet/Ratrod "BUILD"

Quick story in 1987 the owner of the car took it off the road. He decided to build the car for the dragstrip. He tubbed the car, added a small cage, built the 440 and trans. Changed the gears. While working on the interior of the car he died. This car has been sitting for over 20 years under a pole shed and never made one pass down the track. I hate to see it tubbed being a R/T but he did a super job. He did not cut the dash. Still has the factory 150 speedo buckets and console.

Here is what I am starting with,,,

Plans for the car nothing show worthy,, Its going to keep the old school drag car look,, and the look that it was just dragged out of a pole barn. Its going to be loud and sound nasty. I will run the tunnel ram a dual quads..

Pulled the engine and took it apart to see what was in it. 69 440 HP with 906 heads. I guess I can throw number matching out the window..

The engine looks super inside.. Forged flat tops, steele crank arp rod bolts with new rods.. Plus the engine was balanced.. I dropped the heads off at the machine shop for inspection. I also dropped the crank off to be polished.

Looked like 2 lobes on the cam were fixing to get smoked.. The blame like 99% of the time improper valve train set up. It had some kind of double springs that seemed to be for some kind of 700 lift cam or bigger . The cam lifters and springs headed straight for the trash can.

Stripped all the wires out and threw them in the trash also. Just like most 67 cars they were hard and spliced everywhere. Pulled the wiper motor and made a block off plate. Here is a pic of the size tire thats on the back... I will go with the same size but a street tire.

Dug up some phone numbers of some old mopar connections and their still alive.. The hood they cut for the tunnel ram was rusty. I found a original white paint basic coronet hood that was stored inside. I still have the original R/T hood uncut.

I also found a basic 120mph dash to cut up for my gauges. I did not want to cut the factory 150mph dash. If you notice the 11000 rpm 3.5 inch tach with recall. This tach was never sold to the public you can only buy the monster tach that goes to 11000. It was sold for use in Nascars,, I bought a pile of gauges that were take-outs from a Nascar.. They use them in one race then change them.

Your flat tappet purple cam still needs that zinc additive for the cam lobes.

I did not build the engine the first time, and I am not the one that smoked the lobe or put the wrong springs on. But I will be the one that corrects the problem LOL...

Got the block an crank back from the machine shop.. All good the block is 30 over and was decked 30 also by the previous owner..

Being their was only a couple of hours of run time, a quick dingle berry hone was all it needed, I also had the crank polished.. The crank is 10/10.

Tonight I installed the freeze plugs, cam bearings and crank.

Got to work on my engine tonight,, One of the biggest reason I am doing this project is my son said he wanted to learn how to build a engine. So I am showing him how to do everything.. Not bad for him being 19 and want to hang out on saturday night and build a engine. Plus thats after working from 6am till 3pm, then band practice from 4 till 7 then engine time from 7 to 12..

Everything went good tonight just 2 problems.. The pushrods are to long.. I took a gamble and bought the stock lenth.. Also the oil pickup for the 8 quart pan is the wrong thread size..

I goofed up I got the 1/2,, I have been buying parts from summit for over 20 years and never had a problem.. I called their tec line and they could not tell me what oil pickup I needed or what pick up went with that pan.. I got the pickup from jegs an the pan from summit. Plus summit did not have them in stock...

I belive the push rods I need are comp 7402-16 8.555,,, I have the 9.295 and their to long.. Friends bringing by a tool so I cam measure what I need.. Summit says ship date 3-1-13 on them.. Guess they will loose another sale from me.

The optimum word is custom ! So there are bound to be things that need attention / fitting during the build..
