First engine build and its a 383!

First off Hi everyone, this is my first post. I have a 65 Chrysler Windsor I've taken on as my first project. The car is known as a Newport in the U.S. The car came with its original 361 which I've pulled. I was going to rebuild the 361 but after doing some research decided on building a 383. The car will be used for cruising. I'm planning on lowering it and murdering it out. So as far as my build is concerned I would like something that will be fun to drive on a daily basis around town that also has some muscle when I need it. So I picked up a 69 383 block and some stock 383 heads. Here is what I was thinking:

boring it .30 and getting some flat top pistons
Stock crankshaft from the 361
Comp flat-tappet camshaft and lifters
Comp PN 925-16 valve springs
Comp Ultra-Pro Magnum rockers
Edelbrock 383 Victor intake

No thoughts on the carb yet and haven't decided if I want to put headers on. Again I don't want a street machine just something with some toughness that is till good as a daily driver around town.
I'm pretty new at this so would appreciate some expert opinions and advice.

Thanks

DC -

Welcome aboard, sounds like a cool project.

I know you didn't go into detail, so here a few suggestions:
1. Have a good valve job done and replace as necessary.
2. Assume you mean an hydrolic cam, just keep the specs reasonable and in line with the trany and rear gear ratio (would help to know what they are)
3. The Eddy Victor looks cool, but is a high RPM manifold and might bog you down a little at low RPM. While there are ways around that, going with their Performer RPM would be a better choice.
4. A Holley or Eddy carb in the 600 - 750 range would work
5. You might want to consider Headers, more for sound than performance , based on your end game.

Unless you own it already,
forget the victor and go with a performer or a good two plain intake.

Ok so I've done some more reading and for what i'm doing with the car I've decided to keep the build simple. I looked over my parts that came off the Windsor and I do have a Edelbrock Performer so I will be taking Iowans advice and going with that. It also came with a Holley 8051B. If anyone can tell me about that carb let me know.

As far as the rest of the build I will bore .30, flat pistons, A 21-670-4 cam kit from comp cams and Hi-Flow Tri-Y Under Chassis B/RB Headers from Schumacher, Stock 906 heads

Ive also added some pics of the car now and some pics of where i'm headed with this project.

Yes it will be a lowrider cruiser. I shouldn't use headers i'd be better off with exhaust manifolds? Just curious why?

Love the car, learned to drive on my Dad's 1966 Windsor 4 door. Like the build but have a few suggestions if you don't mind.

I ran your combo on Comp Cams Camquest and the XE 274 H makes more HP and TQ. Even with this cam a higher stall torque converter and 3.23-3.55 gear ratio will help to get this heavy vehicle moving, if you don't then I would drop my cam duration down to the 250-260 advertised duration range.

No I don't mind at all, I appreciate all your suggestions. So I visited my machine shop and the guys going to help me make some decisions with my build and putting a different tranny in to handle the torque. First off he's gonna check the block and heads to make sure they are still good and then go from there. Meanwhile I'm stripping down the car. pulled most of the interior out and there are some nasty rust spots under drivers and passenger feet area. So i'm thin king about learning how to weld now so i can do that myself. Some cheap mig welders on craigslist.

Oh man that's a good motor. I had a 67 dodge polara with the 383 2bbl she threw a rod bearing . Neighbor said i couldn't so i did. Man took her 40 out ten under on crank and journal. Then machine shop made recomendations molly rings a 4 wheel drive cam metal timing gears and enlarged the oil pump . All these people in their camaros and what not had no idea what this 120 inch wheel base cruiser could do.. Good luck on your project would like to hear what you do to it .
