84 Prospector Amp Guage Issues

New to this great forum. I have a 1984 Dodge D250 Royal SE Prospector, automatic, 4 x 4. I think it has a 318 engine. This truck is a recent purchase that had been setting for about 4 years. I drove it home with no issues.
I don't think it is the gauge, but that is how I can explain what is going on. I started with several electrical issues; gauges, parking lights, dash lights, backup lights, and turn signals. I have a lot of those items fixed except the amp gauge. It seemed to be semi working, meaning the gauge would slightly move to the pos. side and with load it would move again slightly to the neg. side. I had several wires under the hood that had cracked and had bare spots so I taped them for now, to be replaced once everything works. The gauge randomly will jump 3/4" to the positive side when the starter is activated. It starts real easy so a soon as you let up on the started it goes to it normal resting place.
I had 15 volts out of the alternator and 15 volts at the battery. I now have 12 volts out of the alternator and at the battery. it stopped showing the slight charging on the gauge but still shoe load. I disconnect the battery and it dies so I need to rebuild the alternator or replace it.
Thanks in advance for any information that you could provide.

Bob,
Thanks for the link, I'm working on bypassing the AMP gauge. I will let you know how it goes.

Where would I hook up a volt meter up: parallel with hot to the battery from the alternator?

TIA

My preference is to put it inline with the Fuse block main feed wire. But that is just me. Guy yell at me all the time for doing it that way... But, works for me.

Bob,

Works for me, I will give it a try.

They don't mention anything about the VR when bypassing the alternator gauge, I assume I just leave the wiring as is.

TIA

Yes... That you can leave the same if is working good. Ma-Mopar had a lot of connection spices so sometimes you have to chas these one at a time....

Bob,

Your are right on the splices, I found a couple that did not look to good.

I should get my voltage gauge and 2 isolation post connectors tomorrow. I have several hots going to the battery so I decided to use a isolation post. Can I just run one fusible link from this isolation post to the battery? The drawings show all going to the starter relay.

TIA
Wayne

You can, Just use a good fuse link and good insolation to protect it...
Don't forget... Your you just need a good source of voltage for the volt gauge... you not putting it inline as a replacement.

Bob,

What size wire should I use, there are a couple of 10 gauge wires, three 12 gauge wires, and one 16 gauge. I'm thinking a 14 gauge would work, thoughts?

Thanks Bob for the help. I will let you know how turns out.

TIA

Bob,

Sorry for no letting you know the final status.

I put the terminals in and that seems to be a good thing. I had a few things come up that were not explainable, oil pressure gauge not working, turn signals, etc. (all had been working). I checked and cleaned all grounding points. That cured those problems and everything has been working fine. I have taken it for a few short trips and it seems to be running fine.

I am not real comfortable with the oil pressure, it has the standard gauge.

Now, I need to find the time to give it a good bath, inside and out. The speedo reads 89,000 miles and I think that is the first time around. The only body damage is under the drivers door. There are not even any door dings to speak of, just a few scratches here and there. The paint on the hood appears to have been just worn off. I will start looking for a rear bumper when I get a minute.

Thanks again for all of help. This is a great forum.

Wayne

Iowan,

Thanks, I think it will do all I need. It will be used for an occasional driver and light hauling when the weather permits. I have an enclosed trailer for those Seattle damp days. I might just clear that hood to keep the patina. I need to find the chrome for around the windshield, the ram hood ornament, and rear bumper. I haven't even looked for them yet.

Thanks,

Wayne

Nice Wayne, might just need a new sending unit for the oil. Could just be an old faulty sender. Looks good. Hope it serves you well..
Thanks for the up date!!!👍👍
