So I needed an all purpose rig, was thinking a truck, but I wanted something, should worse come to worse I could sleep/camp in, buit also be able to haul stuff and short distance towing. A guy almost gave me a '94 Ford E350 with 351 Windsor and EFI, but the jerk had already promised it elsehwere and told me later they still wanted it. So I wen't on the market, knowing I could find a $500-600 runner, as long as I was willing to get a rig that wasn't perfect, had some rough edges.
Well she has some body rust, but nothing at all down on the frame, just the paneling. The dash is dead, and I mean dead, needs a speedo cable, but other than the lights, nothing works. I'm guessing the ground strap likely went bad? The wiring is definitely the worst part of the rig.
She starts fine, even cold. If she sits too long you have to prime the carb he says, I guess it's probably a Thermouad, though I have not pulled the air cleaner, he said from his study, it's the msot efficient carb for the 318, and AFAIK, that'd be a Thermoquad?
The driver door hinges are sagging and sagiing badly, I hope that it's just the door and not the frame? It does open and close, but you have to lift it to get it to line up right.
For $500 I wasn't expecting the world, but it seems to have a good sound drivetrain. A little bit of lifter click when she's cold or when you jump on the gas, but nothing as bad as many of my old Chevys (Yes I always have been a Chevy guy previously). I just hope I'm not sorry for going Mopar when it comes time to buy parts.
Oh I should also mention I picked up a running 440 as well. Will it fit the van? I know it would be more power, would the bell hosing fit? How much worse would gas mileage be?
The 440 is in a motorhome. The rig could be restored, but it needs a roof. Not sure if I fix the Winne or steal the big block.
I seem to recall from when I owned older Mopars in the past, but compared to a Chevy the starter sound sounds, well sick. With my Chevies it was always a well defined starter sound. This thing spins the motor even faster than any chevy and is much less defined, to me it sounds awful but I seem to remember being told it's normal for a mopar starter, they just sound funny?
Does seem to work fine, but that sound is cringeworthy!
