Unhappy Won't shift past reverse

I have an 86 w-250 4X4 93,000 miles. Replaced trans and moved before finished. When I got back to it discovered my helper had somehow not lined up the park pawl correctly and used the trans to transfer case bolts to suck it up together.[I assume] I pulled the pawl and replaced with one from salvage yard. Now truck back in one piece mostly but when tried to move truck went in reverse backed out and won't make the shift to drive, will go to neutral and that's it won't shift past that point. Also when i start the truck it acts like it wants to take off in drive for just a second. Any help greatly appreciated I've had this truck about 6 yrs now and want to take it out. Hate to have to sell.

Sounds like the linkage is not rite... If you disconnect the linkage from the shift lever at the trans... Will every thing work and sweep ok?
