Carter 4540

Carter 4540
First, is there such a unit? I can't seem to find any data on this version of the Carter which is supposed to be a AVS C-4. I was told it is applicable to a 340 & 383, which 383 was not specified, in years 68, 69, & 70. Another person said he had one on a 68 Coronet 500 with a 383. It's driving me nuts I can't find any listing for this unit.
Thanks

It's not mine, some other guy who wanted to know what engine it goes on. The picture to me is fuzzy and you can't really clearly see the numbers. So I questioned the 4540 number after looking it up and trying to answer his question. But if I really look hard it appears to be a 4640 which would make sense belonging to a 440. But a couple other's say they had this 4540 on both a 340 on a 68 Dart and then a 68 Coronet 500 with a 383.

I have two Carter's sitting on my bench a 4616 & 4682, both of them the "6" look a lot like this one claiming to be a "5".
The reason I have a 4616 sitting on my bench is some guy (the seller) told me it was correct for my car. Then, nope, later I find out it is not. My bad, I did not properly do my research, like ask you guys. The guy who is selling does not know what it goes on and has one person telling him he had this on his 68-340 Dart but it will work on a 68-69-70 340 & 383 engines. Another guy confirms he had it on his 68Coronet 500 with a 383.
I can find nothing, no documentation that there is such a model. But it's hard to debate with "I had one" if you know what I mean. I got to trust that they did, both seem knowledgeable enough and certainly have more experience than me.

Honestly, it looks like a 5 to me as well. But since there is no apparent documentation to what this goes on, where did it come from. You can't even find a rebuild kit for it anywhere. And if it is from a 340 for 68-69-70 in addition to a 383 for the same three years and given they made two versions of the 383, that's what 9 different engines? You'd think there would be some of them around and the documentation to go with it.
The more I look at stuff and research things the more I find these anomaly's with Chrysler. But the fact this is not a Chrysler made product, but Carter, is what is strange.

I thought about the one off proto-type option as well, but one guy said he had one on his 68 340-Dart and said it was available on the 68-69 & 70 340 & 383 . Then another guy said it was on his 68 Coronet 500 with a 383. So that's two confirmed on two different engines, plus this one, so that's a lot of miss-stamps and prototype's.
I dunno man. It's odd.
If I was looking for a Carburetor for my car even if I had a 340 or 383 (which I do have a 383) I wouldn't buy this one. There is not rebuild kit for it and if you need to do that to run pump gas you're out of luck. Plus there are documented carburetors for all those engines that would be better options.

It's not really a big deal to me, I'm just interested in solving the mystery. I like doing the research. I realize from what I have found on other things back in the 60's things were a bit more loose. If you find anything that would be cool, thanks man.

Mopar Lover
Looked back in all my stuff... dont show any 4540's from 1961 - 1970 Chrysler, Plymouth, Dodge,... So I would chalk it up to a miss-stamped 4640SA 650 CFM AFB.. Or it fits like an International CargoStar gas motor or something like that. But who knows...
I suppose "Stranger things have happened".... lol
Good one tho..

That is my assumption as well. Aside from the two folks who claim they "had" them on their 68 340/Dart & 68 383/Coronet, I can't find anyone with a Mopar background who claim this numerical Carter existed. Those stamps are 50 + years old as well. Easy enough to become deformed a little bit or even faded. I agree with you that this is probably a 4640 with a bad or deformed stamping.
Thanks for the research & the discussion.

Mystery Solved!
The guy selling the unit asked the owner and it came off a 440 car. Closer examination, unlike the blurry picture we had, reveals it is the 4640, and not a mythical 4540.
Not sure about the guys who "had" one on their 68 340 Dart & 68 383 Coronet 500 though.
But I'm satisfied it does not exist.
