If you did not pull the battery, or at least the black cable from the battery, I would guess that's whats wrong.

I'm leaning toward a combination of old gas and a weak spark.

Do you hear anything when you turn the key? Is the clock still on?

As for the gas I would put seafoam in there.

It won't start as in not turn over or it turns over just will not run on its own?

If it does not turn over, Make sure your battery is fully charged and is good (i.e. no dead cells), your electrical connectors are rust/corrosion free and tight.

If it does turn over but not start up, Check to see if you are getting gas to the carb, the gas is good, you've got a good spark, your points are adjusted properly, your timing is good, etc.

Doubtfull, If it was the balast resistor it would fire while cranking and stall when he let go of the key.

Actually, it might only catch when letting off the key, I have had many of them act like that. It's an inexpensive part, and can't hurt to have a spare ( I keep one in the glove box).

It's a 3 speed on the column.....?

I had a '74 that had the same problem, and short of replacing the column ao putting in a floor shifter what I had to do was hold the shifter when in second gear to keep the dogs engaged with the pin. If I let the handle go the pin would not re-align with the dog. I was fortunate enough to find a new column, but we're talking 1983 here.

the reverse detent spring in your tranny could be bad
thats what happened with mine
the reverse lever hits the second linkage, causing it to jam up

I'm sure that you can get one of e-bay.

Could be just the bushings are so worn out. I would install a floor shifter with a cable though. It take a couple of hours, but is much better than a linkage setup.
