66 Belvedere former drag car
What it something like this worth? Its a 66 Bel. that has been in a barn for about 20some years up until about 2 years ago. Was built into a racer in the mid-late 70's.
The body is fairly solid, floorpans and great, rockers and door bottoms have virtually no rust through (if any). The trunk deck has some rusty near the bottom, and the rear 1/4 was slightly cut (3/4" or so) to fit the slicks. Chrome is ok at best, but all original trim is there and good (including gas cap) aside from the hood emblem.
Interior is stripped, aside from dashpad and doorcards. Gauge cluster was removed and replaced with some aftermarket gauges, but all wiring is there. Has rear firewall and full cage (doubt its up to many current regs tho).
When the car raced, I was told it had a 400 in it (comes with the car, looks to have broken something in the head and got into the pistons). Currently has a running 400 w/727 in it with longtubes and a mild cam, no specs on it. Has a line lock, fuel cell, trunk mounted battery, big external fuel pump (has what appears to be an oil filter on it). Drum brakes all around.
Sorry for the suuuper long first post. I have not deal with any old mopars before (former SRT4 owner) and I wasn't alive when any of this stuff was new! Im looking to buy the car described above but is it worth it? Owner wants $4k. I wanted a weekend driveable/trackable car project and stumbled upon this. Any and all help is appreciated and I wil try to get pics.

from the info I have its a 8 3/4. The current 400 has a mild cam, longtubes, and a basic aftermarket carb (not sure or brand, but ya can tell from looking at it). The guy seems like he would deal, i could prolly get it around 3500 and he would deliver (current tires have sat long enough for me not to drive it home 40 miles. This would be my first venture into older mopars like I said so I just don't want to make a mistake on my decision to buy. I don't really need a "drag setup" car, just wanted a driveable weekend warrior.

My 2 cents... lots to consider here.
What are your local laws with regards to street & track, ie: roll bar car
mufflers etc etc.
Track only ? Trailer, truck
Did the car have a rough former owner ?
ie: engine status etc etc, compression test. hows the tranny, smell the fluid check the colour.
I'd do some more homework on the car before making a decision.

if you just want a weekend car, then this might be a little too built for you. I would deffinitley look into a lot more unless the owner needs an answer right away

4K is a bit much in my book. If you were looking for something to drive to the track and race then drive home and that was it, then you would have to look into your state and local laws. If its somethign that you would trailer to the track and back, then it might be something to look into.

I live in WI. Never had a problem driving a caged car on the street (my family had 2 older MG's that had were road racers but still street legal). I'd need to finish the exhaust but thats really it. All the lights etc still work, clean IL title.
Red Devil, why would you say too built? A mild cammed 400 woudln't be the most powerful thing I've ever had. In terms of the cage and stuff ya its overkill for a mostly street car. The tires need replacing, I wouldn't put a full slick back on.
The owner has had it a while, maybe 2 years but lives in the middle of nowhere and its sitting in his driveway during the day (he usually puts it back in his shed at night). She started right up, idled alright. I'm not afraid to put money into it, but im not looking to build a track only car.
(there's also a 75 duster with a mild 360 in it near me for about $5k, but idk the Bel has lines i like more).

If you are after a driver, i'd shop around for something that needs a lot less work on it. That car looks like it needs a complete frame off resto, and unless you have the space/time/skills/tools to do one, you would be spending 2 or 3 times what you would pay for a better starting car.

thanks for the advice guys. I'm not looking for a full restore; I'm 23, really looking for a driver but seem to only find late model sbc powered stuff around me. Thought the 66 might be a solid platform but seems like its more work than its worth for me.
I want a "drive to the track, race, drive home" kinda car. I have all the tools, but not nearly enough space for anything like a frame-off. Thanks for your help.
