I'm in need of a late 70's 360 block or info for a 318 build. I have an 86 dodge 2wd that I'm tryin to turn into a smoker. Has a 318 now that I built but it's weak compared to what I want. I pulled a 360 from the yard and salvaged the heads and rods but the block is bad. Mopar guys help me out. Build the 318 I got that is fresh or someone sell me a block and I'll go extreme?

 

The 318 in those trucks is a great motor. Strong and reliable. If you want to built a pavement pounding hell raiser, go for a BB motor and 727 tranny. They will fit right in there with a set of motor mounts, tranny mount, headers, and radiator. They came factory with BB motor up til 78.

I'm sure that you can find a BB motor in your area for some cheap money that needs a rebuild. Don't forget to upgrade your rear axle.

This is what I would do (I built an 85D100 some time ago). 383 or 440 BB motor, built 727 tranny, 3/4 ton rear D60 out of a dodge D200 (some come with 4.10 gears) and a full spool and disc brakes, tub the bed and throw some big tires back there.

Great now I want to build another truck LOL.

 

I have rebuilt the 727 in it, it should handle quite a bit. I just put a 390 in the rear and a locker, but other than that left it alone. I was told the 9&1/4 were pretty good at hangin in there? Think your right with the bb answer, probably wasting my time with the 360. Ok, so while I'm looking for a 440 any tips on bringing this 318 to life?

 

Update, didn't take long. Y'all mopar guys pulled my arm. Just bought a 69 stock 440 today. Got it for a steal. Someone tell me what I need to do to it, still goin in my 86 truck that I love. My 727 in it should b built enough to handle it, fixin to start ordering next week, so any info would b greatly appreciated.

ya gotta get a 727 case for a big block. your smallblock case will not work. (the big-block had a different bolt pattern, larger that the small-block) Only other option would be a "bolt-on" blow proof bellhousing from J.W. Performance Transmissions. Thie bolt on bellhousing will convert your smallblock transmission to a big-block one. (its actually easy to do). Might be a good idea considering the 4x4 application and extra torque. Go to this web-site. www.cambpellenterprises.com and look under the auto-trans section, that's where they have the "Ultra-bells". I think they're about $285-300. They work good for adapting different transmissions to different motors. Like if you wanted a gm trans behind your 440, they have one for that too.

you can get some alloy heads.the 44o source stealth heads are pretty good for the price they are around 900 u.s.
