Acquired my sons 2007 dodge ram 1500, 4.7 v8. 4x4 He passed about 3 weeks ago at 18 years old. Truck didn’t have a key so I bought and replaced the lock cylinder. It does fire up briefly but then dies. What is the purpose of the control module receiver that wraps around the ignition and plugs into the ignition switch?

Well the module was broken, it was damaged in an accident. Do I need to get a new one then have it programmed? What’s the actual purpose of it?

so buy the new control module receiver and since I already bought the lock cylinder w/ key. Take them both to a dealer and have it coded? And thank you for the condolences

The computer in the truck reads the chip in the key, if they don't match, no start...
So the computer needs to be reprogrammed for the new key...

I really probably should not say this... But Ill just throw it out there... What we have done in the past if we didn't want to pay the high price in Multiple chipped keys. (With a known good chip key) you install it under the plastic cover under the ignition switch. That take care of the proximity issue. then you can just use the blank keys with out the chip, because the chipped key is always active. But it dose make for an easy theft if someone breaks into the vehicle and just so happens to find the key. Security kind of goes out the window. If you know what i mean.
Hope this helps you in your decision.. Cheers

so basically I need to get a chipped key? Get a new receiver and have a dealer code it? The original keys are missing, i just installed a new ignition w/ standard keys. And yes I broke the original receiver. Where do I get a chipped key?

Hello everyone! There is such an incomprehensible problem: one day the car simply began to twitch at idle, while the rpm itself periodically changed from 900-1600 and when they dropped to 900 it just dangled like a boat along the waves, but this was only at idle! (the check is off) Without thinking twice, we picked up the computer personal classifieds rochester ny, but did not find any errors! What is it?
