I need help and suggestions. I am about to under go a build up of a 1980 Plymouth Volare. I currently have only 2 engines in mind a RB big block build up or doing a R3 build. my problem is I dont know which to do I plan on using the car for a well rounded performance car. drag racing autocross are my main choice to compete in. any help would be great.

The R3 motor is a race 340 SB, I believe.

Those are pretty large cars. Is your's a two door or four door? Either way you go, you'll need to do something about the suspension and body sway. A RB BB would be very cool to see but on the other hand a R3 motor could be done and the car could be made to look like a sleeper to most people, even with the hood up.

 

Ok from the racing point of view... I've had both engines but in different cars.. First was the R3 in a 70 Duster... Stroked it to 396" had steel w-2 heads, alum rods, BM pistons, roller comp cam, Offy intake(Modified) and 4500 holly.... Car weighed in at 2800lbs. Had a lot of fiberglass on it... Fenders, doors, hood, deck lid bumpers.... 904 tranny with a dana rear.... This car ran a best time of 9.86 at 133 miles per hour.

The second car was a tube chassis Barracuda... Stroked a 400 to 451". Eagle steel rods and crank. JE pistons, Indy 440-1 heads and intake, Quick Fuel 4500 carb. Ran thru a 727 to a dana rear. This car weighed in at 2500 lbs... Best time here was 9.78 at 140mph....

Considering the weight difference I would say the engines were about equal.... Know this doesn't point you in either direction but it does say that given the right build you can't go wrong either way...

what are your plans for the car?

 

the car is a 1980 volare coupe. I was plaining to do alittle drag racing but I would love to get into autocross racing. I have a 98 dakota rt run a mild 360 that runs high 14s (i need a tranny rebuild). The only reason I think I might go with the 413 is I already have the block just need to build it. I am however looking for a A833 to go with the setup

 

thanks, so was that the 340 with a destroked crank for a 305 ci?

 

If you already have the 413 block, you are already a few steps ahead of the 340 then. I would just build that.

In my opinion having the 413 block is a big plus... I bought a r-3 block planning to build a "spare" engine and a friend blew his up and ended up selling it to him.. This was 2000 or 2001 and the block was $3,500 then.... But this was a Mopar block... Don't know why many others now have it.... JMO....
